How This Scam Works
High Risk — Common New Zealand Delivery Scam
NZ Post does not request payment through emailed links for failed deliveries. If a delivery is missed, NZ Post leaves a card at your address.
You receive an email or text claiming to be from NZ Post saying a parcel couldn't be delivered and you need to pay a small fee to receive it. The amount is usually small — between $1 and $5 — and the message includes a link to complete the payment.
The link leads to a fake NZ Post website that captures your credit card details. The small fee is the bait — the real goal is to steal your financial information for larger unauthorized transactions. Some versions also ask for personal details like your date of birth and address.
CERT NZ has reported a significant increase in delivery-themed phishing in New Zealand, with NZ Post being one of the most impersonated brands. These scams spike during the holiday shopping season and are common year-round.
Red Flags
- Claims your parcel couldn't be delivered and asks for a fee
- Sender address or phone number is not from nzpost.co.nz
