How This Scam Works
High Risk — Facebook Marketplace Fraud Is Rampant
Facebook Marketplace has become one of the most common venues for buyer and seller fraud. Never complete payments off-platform and never send money before receiving goods.
Note: This scam typically arrives via Facebook Marketplace or Messenger, not email. If you received a suspicious email, forward it to check@scam.support for a free risk assessment. For social media scams, report to the FTC — see all reporting agencies.
Scammers operate on both sides of Facebook Marketplace transactions. As fake buyers, they send fabricated payment confirmations, overpay with fake checks and ask for the difference back, or insist on completing payment through a fake escrow service. As fake sellers, they advertise items at attractive prices, collect payment, and never deliver the goods.
According to the FTC, online shopping fraud was one of the top reported fraud categories in 2023. Social media platforms, including Facebook Marketplace, were the most commonly cited contact method for fraud reports among younger adults (ages 18-39), according to FTC data.
